In her essays â€Å"That Crafty Feeling,† â€Å"F. Kafka, Everyman,† and â€Å"The Rise of the Essay,† Zadie Smith writes about the universal experience of writing using her own personal experience as the standard writing experience. Smith completely blends together her personal experiences with more generalized statements throughout her essays. She poses a question that sets the topic of the essay and then proceeds in a linear and logical fashion. Smith then shifts to a more conversational tone. Smith’s use of a noun clause reflects this uncertainty and lack of clarity. Her use of the pronoun â€Å"we† to stand in for all writers establishes a sense of unity among writers, and therefore an inherent universality in writing. Smith believes that over time, essays took on a â€Å"familiar, neutral ring† (The Rise of the Essay). In this case, essays serve an example for writing in general and by answering rhetorical questions aimed at the reader, Smith assumes a similarity to readers and to other writers. This assumed similarity turns into an actual connection as Smith forces the reader to progress through her argument as linearly as she herself does, leading readers by the hand to the same conclusion that she reaches through hypophora and thus perpetuating the idea of a standard writing experience. Smith’s allusions to other writers also supports the idea of a universality in writers, a connection between different writers across time and genres through the simple act of writing. Smith often integrates the arguments of other authors in her own writing, giving the impression that writers are sometimes interchangeable. The â€Å"formula† is the basic idea that writing creates and it is the act of putting pen to paper, finger to keyboard, and writing. It is this â€Å"formula,† this basic standard of writing, that connects all writers and makes writing universal. The â€Å"magic† is the personal aspects writers add to their writing, the link between personal experience and the universal experience of writing. In her essays â€Å"F. Kafka, Everyman,† â€Å"That Crafty Feeling,† and â€Å"The Rise of the Essay,† Zadie Smith argues that all writing is universal. Cultural competence Essay In other words, the way in which culture has been gained, continues in the manner of using it so a work of art would only have meaning and hold interest for someone who possesses the cultural competence or as Bourdieu suggests, the code, into which it is encoded. (Bourdieu, 1984, p. 2) He the goes on to explore the significance of taste for social reproduction and asserts that taste is not an unexplainable subjective experience. According to Bourdieu, tastes can be explained as distinctions or markers of social class. He connects cultural artefacts with culture as everyday living. For example, whilst applying a materialist approach, Bourdieu is able to connect an individuals taste in opera or art to his taste in food. He compares the form and aesthetics of food and art to connect an individuals taste with both. He refers to the pure gaze. For many who are driven by the need for things rather than the luxury the importance of particular foods is that they offer quantity, are economical and offer immediate satisfaction of the senses. If we then apply this to a work of art they would want to look at something which clearly shows a picture of what it is rather than abstract modern art. This is where their cultural competence would be introduced. As a Marxist theorist, Bourdieu suggests that taste is socially patterned and assists social reproduction. In other words, it is not just about the individual but operates in ways to serve the interests of powerful groups in society and that antagonist groups, with differing ideas of culture are engaged in a constant struggle to gain social importance. Bourdieu is extremely deterministic in that he firmly believes that an individuals childhood cultural experiences ultimately determine their adult cultural lives. Finally, cultural competence or capital accrues to those who have the taste to legitimate culture. Some have suggested that Bourdieus argument is similar to that of Leavis. However, it could be argued that Bourdieu, unlike Leavis, has endeavoured to be more analytical about legitimate cultural capital/competence. He has distanced himself from making value judgements. Lury reasons that Bourdieu would see Leavis as part of what he called a (middle) class fraction. However, both Leavis and Bourdieu do use education as a focus of their arguments. The former emphasises the importance of education in enabling individuals to appreciate culture whereas the latter points out that education itself utterly assumes a certain level of cultural competence and understanding. If a person does not have this then they are left feeling inadequate and lacking in ability. Therefore both would agree that education does perform a social function of social stratification. The debate roars on regarding who shapes what is legitimate culture. In recent years, critics have questioned and even rejected the notion of cultural competence. The likes of Fiske, Ang and Geraghty have argued that audiences within modern societies are now able to make informed readings (resistant reading) of cultural texts. Many, such as Steinberg and Kincheloe have suggested that we incorporate cultural pedagogy into the curriculum in schools in order for members of society to learn to incorporate the relevant cultural competence into their consumptive practices. If we once again consider the arguments of Leavis and Bourdieu then cultural competence will remain dependent on ones education and social background. Yet, with the advent of digital technologies such as the internet, offering accessible online learning in its many forms the children and audiences of the future will have the potential to be less passive and therefore more able to construct their own meanings in the process of their cultural consumption. The very notion of performing deep sea diving in order to explore the colossal wreck of an ancient ship is symbolic of how the author is treating the subject of past. At her hand is the book of myths, which is full of misinformation. The diver’s task is then one of dispelling these myths by diving into the deep sea to find the truth. In other words, through her own first-hand experience and observation, the diver seeks to understand what is real from what is make-believe. The poem strongly lends itself to a feminist interpretation due to numerous markers found in it. For example, the diver is first identified as a woman. Also, ships are attributed the feminine gender. The ship-wreck, thus, symbolizes all women of past who got submerged in a male-dominated society and culture. The following lines reveal this symbolism: â€Å"the thing I came for: / the wreck and not the story of the wreck/ the thi ng itself and not the myth/ the drowned face always staring/ toward the sun/ the evidence of damage/ worn by salt and sway into this threadbare beauty/ the ribs of the disaster† (Rich). Further, the lines â€Å"to see the damage that was done/ and the treasures that prevail† are also quite instructive. They suggest that women of the past were damaged in many ways, and yet, they also contained great potential. This unrequited potential corresponds to the treasures of diamonds and rubies that lay buried among the wreck. The effective use of symbolism is also evident in the line â€Å"read the book of myths, / and loaded the camera, / and checked the edge of the knife-blade† (Rich). The camera, being an instrument for recording the truth is an apt ally for the diver’s project of dispelling myths. She also takes a sharp-edged knife with her so as to protect herself from predatory threats. The predators are symbols for patriarchs who do not want their power over women challenged. Hence, the diver is prepared to defend herself from their challenge with a knife.
